How to Write a Song

Title Comes First

Before you can think about writing lyrics to a song you first need to know what you are writing about. The best way to do this is to come up with a title. You want a title that is unique and can sum up the meaning of the song in a few simple words.

Coming up with the perfect title isn't always easy and can sometimes be harder than coming up with the lyrics. There are a few techniques that you can use. One of the most common ways of doing this is to grab a pre-existing title and switching the words around to the way that you can use them. One of the many examples of this used is Diane Warren's famous song "Unbreak My Heart". All she had to do was grab the title "Break My Heart" and add one little syllable.

Now there are hundreds of titles in the world and sometimes you aren't going to find the perfect one to tweak around the way you need it. When this happens you need to turn to magazines and newspapers. Peruse them and try to find unique words and phrases that catch your eye. Don't stop at just one phrase. You need to sit down and write them all down in your notebook. When you have found a few try to rearrange a few letters in each and try to find one that means something to you.

Always be aware of what people are saying and talking about because this is where you can get inspiration as well. Maybe someday while you are eating your lunch and you hear two people talking about something interesting you will think to write about it and a title will immediately come into your head.

Don't be discouraged if it takes you some time to write out the perfect title. Everything takes time to perfect and once you do have that title you will be proud and feel much better when you work at finishing it off.
