Every songwriter is different. Some are naturally outgoing and expressive, while others tend to keep their feelings to themselves. However, almost all songwriters will have experienced songwriter's block at some point in their lives.
When you suffer from writer's block, you feels as though your mind has gone blank and there is no way that you will find anything to write about.
To overcome songwriter's block, you need to stimulate your mind. Here are four great tips to help get you started writing songs again:
- Write, Write, Write - Write a new song, or even just a few lines of a song, every day. Don't worry if what you are writing is any good, or if it even makes sense. The more you write, the easier songwriting will become.
- A Recorder, Dictaphone or Notebook Always Comes in Handy - Sometimes lyrics or melodies will come to you when and where you least expect them. Keep a recorder or a notebook with you wherever you go. That way if you feel inspired, you can record your thoughts before you forget them.
- Write About What You Know - Songwriters often try to write songs about things that they have never experienced because they think that their own lives are too boring for other people to care about. Try sticking to what you know. You might be surprised by how much inspiration you can draw from your own life and by how much other people can relate to the things you have been though. Perhaps you could write about your first kiss or your first love.
- Bring out the Child in You - When it comes to being creative, it is always a good idea to bring out the inner child in you. Spend a day having fun with your closest friends. That doesn't mean going to clubs and drinking. Have fun the way you did when you were a child. Go play in the playground as though you were young again. The more fun you have, the more receptive you will be to new ideas and the easier it will be for you to write songs.
