Verses

Written by writeasong.org

The verses in a song tell the story of the song.

In the verses, the lyrics introduce the characters and explain what happens to them - they create the plot and resemble the stanzas in a poem, while the music creates the emotional tone.

The information that is imparted in the verses will lead up to the title of the song or to the song's hook. A hook is a catchy phrase that listeners find easy to remember. The chorus of a song often contains the hook.

Every verse in a song usually has the same music, but each verse has different lyrics. This allows the plot to move along.

Since the music for each verse is the same, the lyrics for all of the verses should have approximately the same number of syllables.

In popular music, verses are usually four or eight lines long, and are made up of eight or sixteen bars. A bar, or measure, is a unit of time that contains a specific number of beats.

If the song has a chorus, the title usually appears in the chorus but not in any of the verses, although there are exceptions. For example, in country music, the song's title may appear at the end of every verse as well as at the beginning of the chorus.
