Song Structure

Songs have basic elements that are arranged in a variety of commonly used structures. The order of the elements may vary, and not all of them are necessary.

Understanding how to create a structurally sound song will help you to organize the songwriting process.

The chorus has the main theme of the song in it. This part of the song may or may not have the song title in it. The chorus is repetitive and usually contains the hook - the part that grabs the listener’s attention. The chorus is what makes the listener want to listen to the song over and over.

The verses are the meat of the song. They tell the rest of the story, usually explaining the chorus and exploring it more in depth. The verses come between the sections of the chorus. Each verse is different.

The chorus and the verses are the main part of the song. Other components of the song include the introduction and the outro. The intro sets up the song and provides a sense of anticipation before the first verse. The outro concludes the song, giving the listener a sense of closure. There may also be a bridge, which provides the listener with a change in perspective  before a new verse or section of the chorus. A breakdown can tone down the intensity of the song before bringing it back up again.

There are some effective frills that can be put into the song to spice it up. A solo features a member of the band singing or playing an instrument or singing. It can be improvised or rehearsed. Solos are a good way to involve the audience and profile talent within the band. A solo can also break the repetition of the verse- chorus- verse- chorus format. Both vocal and instrumental solos are very effective in grabbing attention of the audience.

Above are some elements that are typically worked into a song. They can be arranged in a number of different ways. Playing around with structure can help you to make your song unique. However, it  is important that your song has some structure so the listener doesn’t get lost in a messy song. Coming up with a basic structure will help you to getting started writing. The structure will act as a road map to lead you to your finished work.
